Evolution of Bulletproof Helmet Materials

Ballistic helmets, also known as bulletproof helmets, are available in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and materials in today’s market. These include rounded steel bowls, hard hat-style liners, and everything in between. Those who have never purchased a bulletproof helmet before could find the extensive range of possibilities and the pressure to choose the one that is the most suitable overwhelming. But the most important thing is to make sure you have the right priorities in place for your safety. The following are the types of bulletproof helmet materials that manufacturers have used over the years. 

  • Aramid: Aramid is a synthetic fiber that can withstand high temperatures without melting or igniting in the presence of oxygen. Aramid was developed by DuPont in 1960. Later on, it gained the name “Kevlar,” which is now commonly abbreviated when referring to “bulletproof material.” 
  • Kevlar: Kevlar is a material that is resistant to heat, in addition to being light and strong. The production of bulletproof vests and helmets for use by the military was fundamentally altered because of this innovation. 
  • Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE): Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), also known as Dyneema or Spectra, is a lightweight high-strength strand type fiber that has been used by body armor manufacturers to increase the bullet resistant quality and comfort of a ballistic helmet. Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) mixes easily with other substances and possesses good bulletproof ability even when used alone. 

The most cutting-edge bulletproof helmets have features such as:

  • User-modular Velcro attachments. 
  • Comfortable padding for the head that is molded to fit the contour of a human skull. 
  • A chemical that can fight bacteria while also absorbing excess moisture. 
  • Ease of use and safety enhancements. 
  • The retention system consists of a ratchet-style dial at the back of the helmet and a four-point chin strap at the front of the helmet.
  • The outer shell of modern ballistic helmets is made of bulletproof material such as Kevlar.
